I had been an engineer for more than 20 years. It was a routine that I knew but it required a lot of travel and I was tired of being gone all the time. I was looking for something else.

I had been told repeatedly that I was a “good salesman” and there were events in my life that pointed to this. At 15 I was told I was a “natural”. At about 30 I was told by the VP in charge of sales that he was moving me from engineering to sales but I told him I would quit if he persisted in making me move. I won (sort of).

I was the engineer the sales team came to when they had a need to talk to the client about tech stuff. I could talk about it without looking at my shoes. I traveled all over the world but I didn’t see myself as a salesman.

Then I decided to go into real estate. That’s another long story and I won’t go into it right now but I was about to go into real estate sales and I needed to know if I was capable. I went to my former business partner, who had told me more than once “you are the best salesman I’ve ever seen” and asked him if he meant it.

Long story short, he confirmed that I could sell, and that was the point at which I made the decision to leave my engineering business and go into real estate. That was 2003. I didn’t know if I could but I was willing to try. It took courage to move from one to the other and I had success at it but there were challenges along the way.

Why am I telling this? As an encouragement to you. To the one who just got downsized or just lost her job and you feel you are too old to start over. To the guy that is just tired of traveling but doesn’t see a way out of it. The average age of real estate agents is 57. You are not too old, you just need a bit of courage and maybe a word of confidence.

If you want to talk about it, schedule a call with me and I’ll talk to you. I’ll tell you the good, the bad and the ugly about the business and we can discuss if you can make it.

I’m here if you want to talk. If you want to schedule a call you can click on this link. It will take you to a calendar where you can request a 30-minute time block. I’ll accept and we’ll get on Google Meet to talk face to face. We can go longer than 30 minutes too but we might need to schedule another time.
