Learn

One of the joys of this business (really any business where you are self employed) is the privilege and obligation to learn.

There is so much to learn as a new agent it just seems to never end. Trust me, you’ll get it but there is always more. When I started riding a motorcycle it required 100% of my attention. You have something to do with both hands and both feet just to get the bike moving without spilling it onto the street. After a while it takes a bit less of your attention. 90, 80, 50, and finally about 20% when everything is clear and you’re just riding to enjoy. You’re doing something but you aren’t doing much. It is freeing to be able to do that.

Real estate will be like that too. So much to learn! It take 100% of your time and attention when you start out and getting to learn all this is really a privilege but eventually it becomes an obligation too. If you choose to be a broker or associate broker, you have lots of classes. If you choose to hire help you have to learn how to handle that too and it matters more when others are involved. Others who count on you to succeed. It’s not just you anymore.

Once you learn then you can teach. You don’t have to know it all to teach either. I learn things from new agents all the time.

I work to read about 40-50 books a year. 1 per week is a great goal but life gets in the way and we don’t always make it but I know folks who say they don’t have time. We all have the same time. 24 hours and you get to choose.

Saying you don’t have time really is an excuse. I heard once “an excuse is a skin of a reason stuffed with a lie”. If you are prevented from reading that could be a reason but to say you don’t have time really just means it’s not a priority.

Learn so you have something to share. Learn so you are a better person tomorrow than you were today. Read a book, play an audio book, read your favorite blog article. Have lunch with someone who thinks differently. If you’re a liberal find a conservative to lunch with and that works both ways. You’ll be challenged to learn from another’s perspective. It can change your world!

Write more and it will compel you to read more. If you get writers block then it just means you’re empty and you need to read, take a walk, notice something you have never noticed before.

I noticed today 3 generations walking along the beach. Young and agile, middle aged and smooth of gait and older with a halting gait and slightly off balance. I found it interesting and plan to research that. As I get older I’d like to have a smooth gait, firm footed and less likely to fall. I wonder if that’s possible with the right workout and practice. It’s what I noticed today and what I thought about.

This journey will be more enjoyable for you and those you interact with if you never stop learning.

I’d love to hear from you. What are you thinking as you read this? Comment below and maybe we both learn something today.
